If a scheduling tool has ever told you "this account isn't supported", this is why: Instagram only lets third-party apps publish to Professional accounts. The switch is free, reversible, takes about a minute, and unlocks Insights you'll want anyway. Here's exactly what to tap and what changes.
The steps (about 60 seconds)
- Open Instagram and go to your profile.
- Tap the ☰ menu (top right) → Settings and activity.
- Scroll to For professionals → Account type and tools.
- Tap Switch to professional account and continue through the intro screens.
- Pick a category (it can be hidden from your profile later) and choose Creator or Business — see below.
- Optionally add contact details, connect a Facebook Page, or skip both. Done.
Your followers, posts, username and DMs don't change. The only visible difference is an optional category label and contact button, both of which you can hide.
Creator or Business?
| Creator | Business | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Individuals: creators, artists, coaches, public figures | Shops, brands, local businesses, agencies |
| Contact button | Optional, can be hidden | Address, phone, email shown |
| Facebook Page | Optional | Recommended (needed for some ads/shopping features) |
| Third-party scheduling | ✓ | ✓ |
| Insights | ✓ | ✓ |
| Switch between them later | ✓ | ✓ |
If you're a person, pick Creator. Both types work with every scheduler, including RiseScribe's Instagram scheduler.
What you gain
- Insights — reach, profile visits, follower growth, and the "Most active times" chart that tells you when to post (how to use it).
- Scheduling — in the Instagram app, in Meta Business Suite, and through third-party tools.
- Professional dashboard, branded content tools, and (for Business) shopping and ad features.
The reach myth
You'll read that switching "kills your reach". There's no evidence Instagram penalises Professional accounts — the vast majority of large creators are on one. What does happen: Professional accounts can't be private, so if you were private, your content is now competing in the open. And people who switch often start posting differently (more promotional), which is what actually moves the numbers. Switch, keep posting the way that was working, and judge after a month with the Insights you didn't have before.
Switching back
Settings and activity → Account type and tools → Switch to personal account. You lose Insights history and any scheduled posts from third-party tools stop publishing, but nothing else changes. You can switch as often as you like.
